When I first met with Mackenzie’s parents at our consult meeting, I knew that I was going to love working with them. They were such a fun couple and so easy going! I was so excited to capture the journey as they welcomed their first child into their life. The challenge for her parents though is that her dad is a member of the national guard and would be away for training a little bit before her due date.

So….when I got the text that gorgeous Friday morning that her water had broke and she was heading into the hospital my first through went to “Is this his weekend away?” And indeed, it was. Dad was several hours away, but was making his way back! He made it back that afternoon, but without too much time to spare, as sweet Mackenzie made her entrance into the world at 5:51pm 🙂

New arrival images are so fun for me to capture. These sessions are in-hospital pictures within a day of the babies birth. Often times, if a family isn’t quite sure they want birth images or for some reason I am not able to capture the birth, these sessions provide those “brand new” images while mom and baby are still in the hospital. While it still requires me to me be “off-call” for the family, it doesn’t require the time commitment of a full birth and thus is it is economical option for families to get fresh images of their baby prior to their newborn portrait session.

The Birth of Sadie | Springfield IL Birth Photography

Capturing births is one of my favorite things to do. I wish I had more time that allowed me to capture more than I am currently able to. I remember meeting with Sadie’s mom Allie weeks before her birth. Discussing her birth hopes and plans, it starts me getting excited for the date of the babies arrival. Do in early November, as mid to late October arrived, I knew that baby Sadie could arrive at any time. The afternoon of October 27th, I received the text “we are headed to the hospital….” After having been up all night, Allie’s progress was going very, very slow. I headed over to the hospital that morning to find that thankfully mom and dad were getting a little bit of rest, but as the hours went by I could tell that they both were getting a little anxious to meet their little girl. As their OBs day hours came to a close and the transition to the on-call doctor came close, fortunately so did Allie’s progress. Despite her long labor, Allie made delivery look easy. At 5:09pm on October 28th, Sadie came out bright eyed and beautiful!

So I am finally getting around to blogging some of my early November sessions and such. It seemed like all my November momma’s decided to deliver their babies in the same exact week, which meant for a very busy couple weeks of newborn sessions and a fabulous day of birth coverage. First I will talk a little about the birth day of Paxton.

For the weeks preceding his birth, Paxton’s momma and I were in contact regularly. She was hoping to deliver Paxton via a VBAC so we were on alert in the weeks, then days leading up to his due date. Unfortunately, as we got closer and closer to his due date it seemed as though a c-section was likely going to be in the cards for Paxton as little to no progress towards delivery was made. As a c-section mom myself (with my first 3 1/2 years ago and planned for our #2 this coming March) I have to say though that while the idea of a major surgery can be scarey and not necessarily what a mother wants for her child’s day of birth, it does not mean that the day is any less special or less of a miracle.

When I arrived at the hospital early in the morning, it was dark and quiet out. There was a sort of peacefulness which was the perfect start to such a calm and tranquil day. Paxton’s parents were in their room relaxing and watching the early morning news while waiting for Paxton’s grandparents and big brother to arrive. Certainly there was a bit of fear and stress present, as with any birth, but as family began to arrive and big brother Dawson played “Angry Birds” on the ipad, there was a sort of calm and normalcy that took over the room. Joking, talking, relaxing. Time drew near and it was time to take mom off for surgery prep. Watching his momma being rolled out of the room was hard for big brother Dawson, but his toddler attention-span was quickly diverted with the help of dad and grandma.

After Paxton’s dad and I entered the operating room it was no less that 5 minutes later that the doctors began pulling him out of his mom’s belly. He let out the relieving initial cries and after being wiped off by the pediatric nurse went into a zen-like state as they poked and prodded him. After the initial screenings he was brought to his mom and dad where he laid quietly upon his mother’s chest and they stitched her up. Once back in the room big brother met little brother and everyone began to love on their sweet new baby.
